About Gastroparesis
Gastroparesis is a debilitating condition, often referred to simply as stomach paralysis, that causes delayed stomach emptying and other symptoms such as:
- Severe nausea and vomiting
- Abdominal pain and bloating
- Loss of appetite and weight loss
- Malnutrition and dehydration
- Difficulty eating and absorbing nutrients
An ileus is very similar to gastroparesis but for the small intestines rather than the stomach. It is simply when the muscles of the small intestine do not act normally to move food through to the large intestine.
An intestinal pseudo-obstruction is when a patient appears to have a blockage of the large or small intestine, but in reality, the patient’s intestinal muscles are not working properly to move food, similar to what was just described for an ileus. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) finally acted in September 2023 to require Novo Nordisk to include information on ileus in Ozempic’s warning label, but as of December 2023, there is still no mention made of these severe gastrointestinal risks in the label highlights on the first page.
February 2024 Ozempic Update
On February 2, 2024, the Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation ordered that all Ozempic, and other GLP-1 medication cases, be consolidated in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. Those cases will now be presided over by Judge Gene E.K. Pratter who will be able to handle common procedural issues shared amongst all the cases. Over the coming months, Judge Pratter will likely issue a scheduling order that will provide a detailed timeline of how these cases will proceed.
Multidistrict Litigation helps reduce the plaintiffs’ costs and expenses, aids in efficient pursuit of the claims, and allows for uniform pre-trial decisions from a single judge. That said, these cases will not become a class action, and plaintiffs involved will still retain their right to an individual trial in their chosen home venue.
Do I have a Potential GLP-1/Weight Loss Medication Case?
You may have a case if you:
- Are 75 years old or younger;
- Received a diagnosis of gastroparesis, stomach paralysis, gastric obstruction, ileus, or intestinal pseudo-obstruction while taking these drugs or within 30 days of stopping use; and
- Required an emergency room visit or hospital admission.
- Are no longer taking the medication
