Talcum Powder Ovarian Cancer

On July 12, 2018, a jury in St. Louis, Missouri awarded 22 women and their families a $4.7 Billion verdict against Johnson & Johnson. These women joined thousands of other women across the country in filing talcum powder lawsuits against Johnson & Johnson, claiming that their talcum baby powder and other talc-based products have caused their ovarian cancer. The multidistrict litigation (MDL) has since grown to more than 9,000 claims, with more expected. If you used talcum powder products and have been diagnosed with ovarian cancer, contact our experienced attorneys to get the help you deserve - call (877) 562-0000 now or fill out our free consultation form.

Talcum Powder and Cancer

Talcum powder is often used in personal hygiene to wick away sweat and prevent rashes or chafing. Because talc does not break down in the body, a woman’s risk of developing cancer could increase if the powder particles travel through the vagina, uterus, and fallopian tubes and settle in the ovaries. These particles inflame ovarian tissues, producing cysts that can then lead to ovarian cancer. According to the Centers for Disease Control, approximately 21,000 women in the United States get ovarian cancer each year.

How is Talc Dangerous?

Talc is a naturally occurring mineral mined from the earth. It can be found in close proximity to other naturally occurring minerals including asbestos, arsenic, quartz and heavy metals. These minerals are classified as “carcinogenic to humans” or “possibly carcinogenic to humans” by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), an agency of the World Health Organization. Because of the long latency period associated with asbestos-related diseases, many people who routinely used contaminated talcum powder may only just now develop symptoms of mesothelioma or ovarian cancer.
