In January 2022, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) issued a safety recall report regarding faulty airbags in Kia vehicles that fail to deploy when necessary. This recall followed an NHTSA report that indicated over 400,000 Kia-manufactured vehicles could have faulty airbags, including over 250,000 Kia Soul vehicles (2017-2019).
According to the report, the issues involve a memory chip in the vehicles’ circuit board. The chip allegedly can inadvertently come in contact with the Airbag Control Unit (ACU), leading to potential electrical issues that affect the airbag’s deployment.
“The Airbag Warning Light will illuminate with diagnostic trouble code B1620 and the vehicle’s airbags will not deploy in crashes where deployment is necessary,” the report states.
