The U.S. Food and Drug Administration and Centers for Disease Control investigated the case of five Ohio teenagers who contracted Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) after being vaccinated with Menactra, a meningitis vaccine given to college-age individuals. The government did not change the drug’s recommendations despite uncovering a total of 15 cases of people ages 11 to 19 contracting GBS within two weeks of their Menactra vaccination.
While complications from common vaccines may be rare, they do happen. In 1989, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services established the National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program (VICP) in response to claims filed by patients harmed by immunizations for various illnesses. Since its inception, tens of thousands of people have filed such claims.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), anyone can develop GBS. In 2005, the FDA and the CDC investigating multiple reports of GBS among people immunized with Menactra®, a new vaccine for meningitis. Despite this investigation, the drug’s recommendations were not changed.
ADEM Triggered By Immunizations
A rare condition associated with inflammation of the brain and spinal cord, ADEM can impact a wide range of activities within the central nervous system. The resulting symptoms can vary from paralysis to seizures and nausea.
“About five percent of all cases of ADEM might be triggered by recent immunization,” Dr. Aaron Boster stated in an interview with Yahoo Health. “ADEM is in the same vein as multiple sclerosis,” Boster said. “But with M.S., you’ll have one area of inflammation, affecting one part of the central nervous system. Here, you might have 20 or 30 [areas] all at the same time. When you do an MRI, you’ll see these large, fluffy, white lesions throughout the brain and spinal cord.”
