What is Tepezza?
Tepezza is a fairly new drug, approved for use in January 2020 with distribution beginning soon after. It’s used to treat thyroid eye disease, with a course of treatment generally lasting about six months.
Tepezza is an IV (intravenous) medicine, delivered via an infusion by a registered nurse or a medical practitioner. The drug’s manufacturers are Horizon Therapeutics USA, Inc. (Horizon), a subsidiary of Horizon Therapeutics PLC based out of Dublin, Ireland, with U.S. headquarters in Illinois.
What is Thyroid Eye Disease?
Thyroid eye disease (TED) involves inflammation of the tissues around the eye. This can include the muscles surrounding the eyes as well as connective and fatty tissue. Patients with TED often experience their eyes becoming red, swollen, and uncomfortable, and severe cases can also lead to their eyeballs being pushed forward in a bulging manner. While TED is rarely life-threatening, these symptoms can significantly affect quality of life.
TED is also sometimes known as Graves’ orbitopathy or Graves’ ophthalmopathy as thyroid eye disease most commonly occurs in patients with Grave’s disease.
How is Tepezza Leading to Hearing Loss?
Multiple studies have now shown that Tepezza markedly increases the risk of hearing loss in patients undergoing treatment.
In particular, one 2021 study conducted at Stanford University showed that 46% of the patients studied developed some level of hearing loss following Tepezza infusion, and the hearing loss failed to improve after stopping Tepezza use in at least 15% of those patients.
Tepezza Hearing Loss Lawsuits
The first Tepezza hearing loss lawsuit was filed in August 2022. The complaint alleges that despite these well-documented risks of Tepezza, its manufacturers failed to change the warning label to reflect these severe risks.
