What Are Up & Up Baby Wipes?
Up & Up is Target's store-brand baby care line. The Fragrance-Free and Fresh Cucumber-Scented wipes were manufactured by Sapro Temizlik Urunleri and sold in Target stores nationwide and on Target.com. Parents used them daily on newborns, infants, and young children, expecting a product that met basic safety standards. It did not.
Why Were Up & Up Baby Wipes Recalled?
On June 4, 2026, Target issued a voluntary recall after consumers reported discoloration in the product and adverse health events. FDA laboratory testing confirmed what those reports suggested: Burkholderia cepacia complex and Burkholderia gladioli were present in product samples.

The FDA classified the recall as serious, warning that contaminated wipes may cause life-threatening infections. Affected lot codes cover manufacturing dates from November 7, 2025, through May 5, 2026 (Fragrance Free), and December 29 through 30, 2025 (Fresh Cucumber). Both Target and Sapro Temizlik Urunleri had already received adverse event reports prior to testing, confirming the contamination.
Potential Risks and Complications
The FDA warned that use of contaminated wipes may cause serious and life-threatening infections. Documented risks include:
- Skin irritation, worsening diaper rash, swelling, and pus
- Eye irritation and inflammation
- Fever and fatigue
- Respiratory symptoms
- Bloodstream infection (sepsis)
- Pneumonia
- Hospitalization
Newborns, infants, and immunocompromised individuals face the most severe risk. The CDC has specifically noted that many Burkholderia cepacia strains resist common antibiotics, making these infections difficult to treat and slow to resolve.
How Does Bacterial Contamination Cause These Injuries?
Moist wipes create an ideal environment for bacterial survival and growth. When a manufacturer's quality controls fail to detect or eliminate microbial contamination during production, harmful bacteria are packaged directly into the product and distributed to consumers.
Parents apply wipes multiple times daily to a baby's most sensitive areas: the face, eyes, and diaper region. Each application on broken, irritated, or inflamed skin is a direct pathway for bacteria to enter the body. In infants whose immune systems are still developing, a pathogen that causes only minor irritation in adults can rapidly spread into the bloodstream and become a systemic, life-threatening infection.
That failure happened in manufacturing. It happened before the product ever left the facility.
