Hunt Safely This Season: Remington 700 Rifle Recalled for Deadly Trigger Defect Hunter shooting with rifle

Nearly One Million Model 700 Rifles Remain Unrepaired

Over the decades, millions of gun owners have relied on the classic Remington 700 bolt-action rifle. But no matter how safely hunters exercise their 2nd Amendment rights, this season nearly one million Remington Model 700 rifles will put lives at risk, despite a little-publicized safety recall regarding defective triggers in the 700 series. Owners may not know it, but Remington Model 700’s have been shown to unintentionally fire with no trigger pull. As a result, Remington has recalled over 1,300,000 Model 700 rifles over the past three years—but only 1 in 4 rifles have been repaired. Soon, many hunters will again place their trust in a recalled trigger without ever having heard of the widespread problem. Remington has faced over one hundred lawsuits alleging injury or death related to a defective trigger in a Remington 700. As a result, the public has learned that Remington has received thousands of complaints of Model 700 misfires over the years, as well as internal documents revealing that Remington has duplicated a discharge with no trigger pull as early as 1975. Remington also continues to face lawsuits for other products that feature the same trigger designs as the Model 700 rifle. Because no government agency can force a gun manufacturer to initiate a safety recall, class action lawsuits have been the only way to pressure Remington into recalling dangerous trigger defects in its products.

What Do I Do If I Have A Remington Model 700 Or Model Seven?

Remington has warned that all owners should STOP USING YOUR RIFLE immediately “until Remington can inspect it to determine if the XMP trigger … could cause an unintentional discharge and, if so, replace the trigger mechanism.” The recall includes all Remington Model 700 and Model Seven rifles manufactured from May 1, 2006 to April 9, 2014 with the X-Mark Pro (“XMP”) trigger. Remington’s own Product Safety Warning and Recall Notice states that Model 700 rifles with XMP triggers “could, under circumstances, unintentionally discharge.” The 2nd Amendment is an important right guaranteed by our Constitution, but gun owners and hunters also have a right to a firearm that they can rely upon, free from known safety defects. While preparing for hunting season, all owners of Remington 700 rifles should  call 1-800-243-9700 and determine whether their rifle is subject to the widespread safety recall.
