Check your pressure cookers — the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) just announced a new recall of pressure cookers due to burn risks. The recall affects nearly 1 million pressure cookers. On Aug. 10, 2023, the CPSC announced this recall of Sensio pressure cookers which can unlock and open during use, causing the super-heated contents to unexpectedly splash out, posing a burn and scald hazard to consumers.
The recall includes Bella, Bella Pro Series, Cooks, and Crux electric and stovetop pressure cookers. These pressure cookers were sold nationally at JCPenney, Kohl’s, Lowe’s, Macy’s, and Target, as well as online retailers from September 2015 through 2020 and add to a growing number of recalled pressure cookers in the last few years.

Pressure cookers have risen in popularity in the past several years. Manufacturers market these cookers as safe and time-saving kitchen appliances that make preparing meals easier. Food is cooked faster by using steam pressure. However, these convenient pressure cookers can cause serious burn and scald injuries to users and anyone else nearby. In 2020, Sunbeam Products recalled nearly 1 million pressure cookers due to explosion and burn hazards.
Water boils and forms steam at 212° F. A child or an elderly person or vulnerable patient with thinner skin can get a third degree burn from boiling water and steam in 3 seconds or less.
