Johnson & Johnson Knew About Asbestos in Baby Powder for Decades Reuters Johnson & Johnson Asbestos A new investigative report from Reuters claims that Johnson & Johnson, “a family company,” knew that its baby powder was tainted with carcinogenic asbestos and kept it a secret from consumer and regulators for decades. If you or a loved one used Johnson & Johnson talc powder products and was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, contact our experienced attorneys to get the help you deserve – call (877) 562-0000 or fill out our free consultation form.

Johnson & Johnson Exposed by Reuters Asbestos Investigation

According to the Reuters investigation, Johnson & Johnson knew that its baby powder talc supply contained asbestos as early as 1971. Internal documents show that J&J sold talc powder, primarily used as baby powder on infants and for women's personal hygiene, that it knew was tainted with carcinogenic asbestos for decades and purposely kept it from regulators and the public. For more than 40 years, J&J executives, mine managers, scientists, doctors, and lawyers fretted over this problem: Johnson & Johnson’s talc powder tested positive for small amounts of carcinogenic asbestos. However, scientists and government officials who raised alarms in the 1970s about asbestos in its consumer talc powders were ignored. A Mount Sinai scientist told Johnson & Johnson that he found small amounts of asbestos in its Baby Powder in 1971. Johnson & Johnson disagreed, and put his name on an internal list of ‘antagonistic personalities.’

J&J Talc and Baby Powder Linked to Asbestos

A lab that plaintiffs hired in a lawsuit against Johnson & Johnson found asbestos in Baby Powder from past decades – in bottles from plaintiffs’ cupboards and acquired from eBay, and even a 1978 bottle held in J&J’s corporate museum. Scientists have long linked asbestos to mesothelioma, which is associated with ovarian cancer. This is not the first case brought against pharmaceutical giant Johnson & Johnson, nor will it be the last. There are more than 9,000 cases involving alleged harm done by talc-based powder making their way through courts around the country, but these products remain on the shelf.
