Philips Recalled CPAP devices due to cancer risks

Medical manufacturer Royal Philips announced a voluntarily recall in June 2021 for several of its sleep apnea machines. Numerous reports indicate the machine’s noise reduction foam may break down and release toxic gasses and particles that could cause chronic respiratory illnesses, poison the user, or even cause cancer.

The recall primarily affects the Philips CPAP machines from the first generation of its DreamStation© line. It also affects some of its Bi-level PAP machines and mechanical ventilators.

Philips was alerted in April 2021 that the noise reduction foam in these devices can break down into particles. The particles then can make their way into the airway portion of the devices. Inhaling, ingesting, or absorbing these particles can increase your risk of lung cancer and other injuries.

Philips claims to be taking steps to remedy the dangers associated with its CPAP devices, but it might be too late for many users of these defective CPAP and Bi-level PAP machines.

Philips has advised that if you use the recalled CPAP and Bi-level PAP machines you should stop immediately and speak to your doctor about alternatives devices to address your sleep apnea. Do not do anything without consulting your physician if you use one of the recalled Philips CPAP, Bi-level PAP devices.

Over 3.5 million Philips Respironics CPAP and BiPAP machines were recalled in June 2021 due to toxic sound abatement foam used in the breathing devices.
