Asbestos exposure was first linked to mesothelioma in 1964, when the first diagnosis of cancer was announced. It is believed that between 1940-1978, more than 10 million people were exposed to asbestos. Currently, more than 2,000 cases of mesothelioma are diagnosed each year.
Asbestos is a group of minerals that occur naturally in the environmental as bundles of fiber. These fibers are resistant to heat, fire, and chemicals which was part of the reason it was so widely used in insulation and roofing, as well as within the shipbuilding and automotive industries.
Millions of workers were subjected to asbestos for years until in the 1970s when the product was banned from use in several products. Other manufacturers voluntarily stopped using it in their products until 1989, when the U.S Environmental Protection Agency banned all new uses of asbestos.
Studies have shown that asbestos exposure can increase the risk of lung cancer and mesothelioma. Additionally, asbestos has been linked to cancers of the throat, esophagus, and gastrointestinal cancers.
If you or a loved one have been the victim of asbestos exposure and now suffer from mesothelioma or other illnesses, the victim may be entitled to compensation for medical expenses, pain and suffering, lost wages, and more. Cory Watson Attorneys wants to help.

High Risk Asbestos Exposure Occupations
The National Institute for Occupational Health and Safety (NIOSH) estimates that more than 75 occupational industries are known to expose their workers to asbestos. Although there are guidelines for how much asbestos a worker may be exposed to, those exposed between 1940-1970 have a higher risk of suffering from an asbestos-related illness or disease.
Occupations with a high risk of being exposed to asbestos include:
- Aerospace workers
- Armed forces veterans
- Automobile mechanics
- Cleaning and custodial service
- Construction workers
- Firefighters
- Miners
- Painters
- Railroad workers
- Refinery workers
- Ship/Boat builders and repairers
- Warehouse employees
- Welders
Many of these industries led to either direct exposure to the mineral or indirect wherein the worker used products that had asbestos or worked in buildings with asbestos. Miners had the greatest potential for asbestos exposure as they had the job of mining the mineral.
Other occupations, such as armed forces veterans, were exposed due to the environment they were working in. Asbestos was commonly used in the building of battleships and military aircraft.
