Alabama is a wonderful place to live and work, but commuting around the state comes with risks. A recent poll by the Federal Highway Administration ranked Alabama as the sixth most dangerous state for drivers in the United States. Trooper Chuck Daniel with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) says distracted driving is one of the leading causes of motor vehicle collisions in our state, especially those involving teen motorists.

Estimates show that each day, 11 drivers under age 20 are killed as the result of inattention on the road. To help Alabama’s youth get educated about distracted driving, several organizations recently partnered with the Crenshaw Community Hospital to show teens the risks.

WTVM 9 News explains Trooper Jim Snyder with ALEA shared how a distracted driver struck him while directing traffic during a shift. He turned his back for one moment and was struck from behind seconds later.

To help reduce the risk of distracted driving accidents, the Alabama car accident attorneys at Cory Watson Attorneys suggest:

  • Putting your phone down– Turn your phone on silent or utilize a message forwarding app to answer calls each time you get in the car.
  • Making adjustments before driving– Input directions into GPS systems, select playlists, and adjust your seats and mirrors before moving a vehicle.
  • Not eating or drinking– Eating and drinking while driving is notoriously listed as a common cause of distraction so wait until you reach your destination to have a meal.
  • Focusing on the road- Talking or caring for other passengers in the vehicle, especially children, can cause you to stray from focusing on the road. Pull over to have a conversation or check on children in the back of your car.

Following these tips can’t keep other motorists from practicing safe driving habits, so it’s pertinent that you also be aware of what to do after an accident occurs if it wasn’t your fault.
