Fatal Accidents in Alabama
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there were 249 deaths due to drunk driving accidents in Alabama in a recent year. This number comes out to 5.49 deaths per 100,000 residents of our state. Impaired driving collisions are on the rise and continue to cause great pain and distress to victims and their family members. Drivers who are impaired pose a danger to themselves and a great risk to others on the roadway. Impaired drivers lack the reaction time that is necessary to avoid hazards and being impaired can reduce their ability to perceive their surroundings, thus increasing the dangers of driving.
When you have been affected by a drunk driving crash in Alabama, you are no doubt feeling a great sense of anger and frustration. As a victim or family member, you understandably want justice for your situation and also want the negligent driver to pay for their actions. Under Alabama law, you could be entitled to compensation as a result of the crash. The law can also provide for punitive damages, which are meant to punish negligent drivers for especially egregious behavior such as driving while impaired.
