Nissan Airbag Recall

On March 26, 2014, Nissan Motor Co. issued a recall affecting 989,701 vehicles sold in the United States and another 60,000 in Canada. These cars, SUVs, and vans have defective computer software, which may lead to passenger-side airbag deployment failure if a crash occurs. Faulty airbags could lead to severe head injuries and physical trauma to passengers.

Faulty Air Bags and Injuries

Airbags exist to protect vehicle passengers in the event of an accident. When these safety devices are not deployed on impact, passengers are more likely to incur severe head injuries and other physical trauma.

Computer software in the affected models may not detect an adult passenger’s presence. If a crash happens and the airbag sensor is not activated passengers are exposed to serious injury.

What Did Nissan Know?

In recall documents, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported that Nissan knew of a similar issue as far back as February 2013. The company reported that, although the issue was corrected at the time, consumers were still submitting complaints and warranty claims even in vehicles that had been fixed.

As part of the recall, owners of the affected models received free software updates in their vehicles. According to the NHTSA and Nissan, nearly one million of these vehicles were sold in the United States.
