Before earning a driver’s license, drivers must first learn the rules of the road including how closely a vehicle is permitted to follow another. When a driver is following another vehicle too closely, it is considered tailgating, a moving violation similar to speeding or reckless driving.
Tailgating is one of the most common causes of car accidents, particularly rear-end crashes. The Alabama Center on Advanced Public Safety notes that more than 13 percent of all collisions in Alabama were caused by tailgating while an additional 9.9 percent were due to a driver misjudging the stopping distance needed.
If you or a loved one has been the victim of a tailgating accident caused by a careless driver, you may be entitled to compensation for property damage, medical expenses, lost wages, and more. Preventing Tailgating Accidents
Tailgating accidents are preventable so long as a driver knows how much space they should keep between their vehicle and the vehicle in front of them.
Some common ways to avoid a tailgating accident include:
- Follow the two-second rule to determine how much space there should be between your vehicle and the one in front of you. Pick a fixed-object to the right of the road up ahead; when the vehicle in front passes the fixed object begin counting. If your vehicle passes the fixed object more than two seconds after, it should be enough room. If it is less than two seconds you should slow down to create more room.
- Remember that bad weather and snowy and icy roads can often lead to hydroplaning.
- When roads are wet or iced drivers should consider increasing the follow distance to a four or five-second count.
- If a vehicle is tailgating your vehicle, you may attempt to lightly tap the brakes to signal them that they are too close. However, do not slam on the brakes as this can cause drivers to become more aggressive. It may be best to simply switch lanes to get out of their way, and out of danger.
Some tailgaters are not even aware that they are following too closely to avoid interacting with the offending driver, as it could worsen the situation. Aggressive driving can be dangerous and could ultimately lead to a car accident.
