The FDA has recommended that health care providers immediately stop implanting Medtronic HeartWare Ventricular Assist Device (HVAD) pumps in their patients due to:
- Increased risks of severe neurological injuries and/or death related to the internal Medtronic pump
- The internal Medtronic HVAD pump’s potential to stop, and if the pump stops it could delay restarting or completely fail to restart
The Medtronic recall comes after numerous Class I recalls. The FDA recommended that healthcare providers stop all new implants of the HeartWare pumps due to receiving more than 100 complaints of the pumps stalling or failing to restart.
