BenicarĀ® Gastrointestinal Issues
In 2013, the warning labels for Benicar were changed to reflect the link between the blood pressure drug and sprue-like enteropathy. This condition mimics the sprue enteropathy in those who suffer from celiac disease, and causes several digestive system issues such as:
- Dehydration
- Diarrhea
- Malabsorption
- Nausea and vomiting
- Stomach cramps
- Stomach inflammation
- Unexplained weight loss
People who suffer from Benicar health complications can have issues absorbing nutrients or fully digesting their food. In many cases, this condition is misdiagnosed as celiac disease or as a severe intolerance to gluten. However, people who suffer these issues because they took Benicar will not improve after removing gluten from their diets; only when the medication is stopped will the symptoms go into remission.
BenicarĀ® Linked to Heart Health Problems
The FDA required the makers of Benicar to include the results of several studies on the warning label in June 2014. These studies examined a link between high doses of Benicar and an increased likelihood of death among diabetic patients. Since the studies also show a decreased likelihood of non-fatal heart attacks in patients taking the medication, the FDA still believes that the benefits of Benicar outweigh the risks for patients with high blood pressure.
Regardless, patients taking Benicar should be aware of the possibility of cardiac events while taking the drug. Additionally, those who took Benicar in the past and suffered a heart attack or other cardiac event should be aware that their injury may be linked to the medication.
