Procter and Gamble announced a recall of aerosol shampoo and conditioner spray products from six brands – Pantene, Aussie, Herbal Essences, Waterless, and Old Spice (discontinued) and Hair Food (discontinued) – following the discovery of benzene in 32 total products.
This marks the fifth Benzene-related aerosol product recall since the beginning of 2021. Benzene, considered a highly toxic human carcinogen (a substance capable of causing cancer), was present in the following products/brands:
- Coppertone sunscreen products
- Johnson & Johnson sunscreen products
- Odor-Eaters aerosol foot sprays
- Bayer Lotrimin and Tinactin foot deodorants
- Various other sunscreen and post-sun products, discovered by Valisure

According to the CDC, Benzene is common throughout our environment, both indoors and outdoors. Repeated exposure to the substance is highly dangerous and can have potentially devastating consequences, including the development of leukemia, blood cancer of the bone marrow, and other blood disorders. Benzene exposure can occur through inhalation, ingestion through the mouth, and skin exposure.
Proctor and Gamble claims that the Benzene levels detected in the aerosol shampoo and conditioner products were not enough to cause any severe consequences, even with daily exposure. However, “out of an abundance of caution,” Procter and Gamble decided to pull the aerosol shampoo and conditioner spray products from the shelves, despite no reported adverse events or effects related to the aerosol sprays.
Users of these hygiene products should check to ensure that their products are not a part of any of the recalls. These resources are available for further information on impacted products, including UPC codes, to see whether your products are included in Procter and Gamble’s recent recall.
