Stay Safe this Labor Day Weekend

Labor Day Weekend Safety Tips Cory Watson Personal Injury Attorneys Alabama

As the summer comes to an end and students head back to school, many families celebrate their final days of freedom together over Labor Day weekend. Unfortunately, many people sustain serious personal injuries from easily preventable accidents during this holiday weekend.

Cory Watson attorneys have provided several safety tips to help you make the most of this time with friends and family, and save you from spending Labor Day weekend in the emergency room.

Safety on the Road

More than 35 million Americans are expected to pack up their bags and hit the road for a weekend getaway. If you’re traveling for Labor Day plans, you can certainly expect some traffic delays.

It’s important to plan ahead, be patient, and always obey posted traffic signs. Remember to buckle up before you go, as seat belts can (and often do) save lives! Exercise more caution than usual – additional drivers on the road typically increases the odds of a potentially fatal car accident.

“Value safety over speed, for the sake of your family as well as other drivers,” says Cory Watson personal injury attorney Curt Tanner.

Don’t Drink and Drive

Labor Day weekend is closely associated with increased alcohol-related traffic accidents. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that the Labor Day weekend is among the most dangerous for accidents on highways and byways. Never drink and drive. Let someone else drive, call a cab, get a ride, or just stay where you are. It is far better to be safe rather than sorry later.

“Alcohol is responsible for thousands of serious injuries over holiday weekends every year, so make a safety plan and designate a driver before you get behind the wheel,” says Tanner.

Safety on the Water

Whether you’re at the pool, beach or out on the lake, take safety precautions and carefully observe boating laws. Pay attention to local notices like the colored flags for wave conditions at the beach. All boaters should wear life jackets while out on the water, no matter how skilled a swimmer they might be.

“As a parent myself, I always make sure that young children wear a properly fitting life jacket when at the lake or beach,” says attorney Stephen Hunt. “With the distraction of family and friends, it is easy for a child to slip away unnoticed and potentially drown if they are not wearing a life jacket.”

Enjoy Your Labor Day Weekend!

Even the most safety-conscious can get into serious accidents, especially on holiday weekends. If you or someone you love suffered an injury due to someone else’s negligence, contact the legal experts at Cory Watson.
