Cory Watson Attorneys Gives Away 150 Helmets to Encourage Bicycle Safety

On Saturday, October 6, Cory Watson attorneys and staff gave away 150 free bicycle helmets to children at Read and Romp Birmingham.
The event was held from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Five Points West Public Library. It was coordinated by United Way of Central Alabama, Reach out and Read-Alabama and Alabama Public Television.
Each child was fitted with an appropriately-sized helmet and given safety advice. Attorneys and staff also gave away Cory Watson goodie bags, including bicycle safety-themed coloring books and crayons.
The event was part of Cory Watson’s Helmets for Kids Program, whose mission is to provide bicycle helmets at no cost to children in the community. Since the program’s inception in 2012, it has donated thousands of helmets to Birmingham area children to encourage bicycle safety.
“In our practice, we’ve seen the devastating effects of traumatic brain injury and it is our mission to keep the kids in our community safe by giving them access to this critical piece of safety equipment,” said firm co-founder Ernest Cory.
Helmets for Kids also raises awareness of the perils of cycling while it’s dark outside in the fall and provides resources for the prevention of bicycle accidents. Many helmet recipients come back year after year, getting to know the staff and testing out their new helmets with family and friends.
“We know it’s the right thing to do when we see the reaction on the faces of the kids and their parents,” said Cory. “We are happy to bring the Helmets for Kids giveaway to Read and Romp again this year.”
