Being in a serious wreck is never a pleasant experience. It happens in a blink of an eye, without warning, thrusting you into a physical and financial nightmare. Damage to your vehicle you’re your personal injuries will subject you to pain, lost time, lost income, and numerous annoyances, all of which the insurance company should be responsible for. However, making sure that the insurance company of the driver that caused your wreck and injuries compensates you fairly can be challenging without the correct knowledge and experience. Below are three tips to help you if you have been injured in a wreck:

  1. NEVER TAKE THE INSURANCE COMPANY’S FIRST OFFER. Insurance companies are not in business to pay you large amounts of money. It is in their best interest to conclude your claim as fast as possible and for as little money as possible. It is likely that you may receive a settlement offer from an insurance company in the days or even hours following a wreck. Do not accept an offer so early in the process. There may be additional medical expenses you will incur over the following weeks, months or even years. If you accept a settlement early in the process then you, not the insurance company, will be responsible for paying for future medical expenses.
  2. DOCUMENT EVERY EXPENSE. Your injury claim is based in large part on the amount of money your accident costs you. Document every expense you incur including medical expenses, lost wages, copays, travel expenses, and any other out of pocket expenses. The insurance company should be responsible for future expenses as well, so it’s important to take that into consideration when determining how much your injury claim is worth.
  3. CALL A LAWYER. No matter how much research you do or how much time and energy you put into your claim, chances are an attorney will be able to secure a larger settlement. In addition, an experienced attorney will handle the majority of the work related to your claim, including dealing with the insurance company, so all you have to worry about is getting better.
