Five people have been diagnosed with Legionnaires’ Disease in Wenatchee, Washington. According to Kiro 7 News, “The only common link found so far is that they all shopped in the produce section at the Safeway on North Miller Street in the last three weeks.” The Safeway grocery store in Wenatchee has since shut down their misters and is currently awaiting test results to see if, in fact, the misters are the source of the Legionella bacteria.
Legionnaires’ disease is a type of pneumonia caused by Legionella bacteria. It is not contagious. Typically, infected patients are exposed to the bacterium after breathing in the mist from water that contains the bacteria.

Signs and symptoms of Legionnaires’ disease include coughing, diarrhea, shortness of breath, high fever, muscle aches, and headaches. These symptoms usually manifest within the first two weeks following exposure to the bacteria. Anyone experiencing any of these symptoms should seek immediate medical attention.
