Cracked, dry lips can be irritating, uncomfortable and unattractive. Fortunately, the cure is quick and easy…. or so we thought. Lip balm! It can be purchased everywhere, it’s inexpensive and most offer immediate relief. EOS is one of the most popular lip balms on the market; millions of the popular pots of gloss are sold every year. However, EOS lip balms may hurt more than they help.
EOS users nationwide have come forward with claims that the lip balm is causing painful rashes and blisters. Rather than bringing comfort to dry lips, EOS in some cases may be making the problem much worse. EOS users have reported rashes that spread all around the mouth and face area, beyond just the lips. EOS users have claimed that the painful blisters multiply with continued use of the lip balm, and that symptoms caused by adverse reactions to EOS lip balm can last 10 days or more.
The egg-shaped EOS (Evolution of Smooth) lip balm has become increasingly popular over the last few years and is available in most major pharmacies and superstores such as Walmart and Target. Packaging for the salve boasts natural, organic ingredients available in flavors such as sweet mint and pomegranate raspberry.
Claims of natural and organic ingredients seem to promise product safety, but can be misleading. Not all natural ingredients are safe. For example, poison ivy is natural, but no one would want to rub it on their face as lip balm. A promise that a product is “natural” doesn’t guarantee it is safe or effective. EOS does not provide consumers with a comprehensive list of product ingredients, and women have claimed to be in the dark about what they are really putting on their lips. EOS also uses the term “organic,” but there is no official definition of what the term organic means in the realm of skincare products. Claims that EOS is an “organic” product have not stopped women from reporting that they required medical care for painful reactions to their lips and faces.
