Major automobile recalls such as the recent Toyota recalls attract lots of media attention because they involve millions of vehicles, but a motorcycle parts recall will garner far less news coverage simply because far fewer vehicles are involved. Fortunately, there are ways for bikers to find out if their motorcycle or parts have been recalled.
Find Out If Your Bike Has Recalled Parts
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website has a special page within www.safecar.com where you may enter your motorcycle make, model, and year and find out about all current or recent recalls…Click on the category titled “Defects or Recalls,” then click on “Search our recall database.” Motorcycle recalls are issued when a motorcycle equipment defect or problem is found that may affect new or used motorcycles. The manufacturer or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration will notify consumers about any defective product that represents a significant danger to the public and needs to be repaired or replaced. Usually the repair or replacement is done at the manufacturer’s expense. If your address has changed or you were not the original purchaser, the official safety alerts or recall notices may not have reached you. Therefore, it is a good idea to check the NHTSA website periodically about your bike. It is also a good idea to check the website about any used bike you are considering for purchase.
Report Problems Or Suspected Safety Issues
Unfortunately, tragic accidents often occur before a defective vehicle or part is recalled. It is very important for bikers to report any suspected vehicle or part defects. These reports from consumers are often the deciding factors in issuing recalls, and they can accelerate safety investigations. The reporting process is fairly quick and easy and can be done via the Internet, or by phone. The website www.safecar.gov includes a front page “File a Complaint” link to an online form to be used to report suspected product safety issues. The NHTSA Hotline number is (888) 327-4236.
Your Legal Rights
Manufacturers may be held responsible for accidents or injuries that occur as a result of defective vehicles or parts. An experienced motorcycle attorney can provide counsel regarding liability.
