On July 12, 2018, a St. Louis jury awarded a $4.7 billion verdict to 22 women who say Johnson & Johnson’s talc-based products gave them ovarian cancer. The women accused the company of failing to warn them about the cancer risks associated with its popular baby powders.
The jury award includes $550 million in compensatory damages and $4.14 billion in punitive damages. It’s the largest verdict to date against Johnson & Johnson’s Baby Powder and Shower to Shower talc-based products.
In this case, the injured women used talc-based powders for decades as a part of their daily feminine hygiene routine.
This is not the first case brought against pharmaceutical giant Johnson & Johnson, nor will it be the last. There are more than 9,000 cases involving alleged harm done by talc-based powder making their way through courts around the country, but the products remain on the shelf.

Studies have shown that there is an elevated risk in women who use talc in their genital area for a long period of time. In 2006, the International Agency for Research in Cancer under the World Health Organization classified the use of talc for feminine hygiene as “possibly carcinogenic to humans.”
